Case study – Monitoring

Keeping a tunnel construction safe

Detailed Case Study

Building of the Sopron tunnel

When M85-Sopron tunnel construction activities started in 2020, SDD Consortium, the main contractor, commissioned the development of a construction monitoring system and data processing software to fulfill their special needs at the Sopron site. This is where SURVIOT was born.
After analyzing the monitoring requirements defined by the design engineer, the contractor's engineering team realized that the resources needed to carry out manual monitoring are extensive. A client side requirement was defined to oversee the construction process in more detail than usual, because of the prior negative experiences with tunnel construction in Hungary. There was no monitoring system available that met their requirements, such as sensor agnostic, multi-user and IT maintenance free. The final decision was made when monitoring personnel cost was compared to the license fee of SURVIOT.

Main goals of the monitoring system

  • Observation of movements of the anchor reinforced, shotcrete portal structure
  • Monitoring the convergence of the concrete structure (wallwork) of the tunnel
  • Monitoring surface movements above the tunnel on the Bécs hill
  • Integrate data from groundwater monitoring wells
  • Monitor buildings above the tunnel

The monitoring of the portal structure is carried out by prisms installed into the shot concrete slope and the surrounding embankment which are measured by a robotic total station in real time.

During the mining activities the observation of the shot concrete wallwork of the tunnel is done by 5 symmetrically installed prisms in every cross section every 10 meters. These are measured continuously by the preinstalled robotic total station in real time.

The total stations are connected to a central data aggregator unit through wireless connection. From there data is transmitted to the cloud, and into SURVIOT using FTP protocol. At the section of the Bécs hill above the tunnel 52 surface points are monitored by SURVIOT’s GNSSPODs using multi-constellation GNSS measurements.

GNSSPODs are remotely monitored hardware units which require periodic battery change as the only maintenance activity. Data connection for the PODs is available through mobile 2G-3G-4G network. Data transmission is done through our own protocol. The heart of the unit is a multi-constellation GNSS receiver equipped with a calibrated GNSS antenna. The accuracy of the system has been certified by the Hungarian GNSS Service Centre.

The automated reading of water levels of groundwater wells is done by SURVIOT WELLPODs. Currently 2 PODs send water level data into the SURVIOT data server using piezometric pressure sensors.

The system also receives data from a locally installed meteorological station which makes it possible to correlate weather data with the movement data series. This allows engineers to separate movements due to ground saturation changes from movement caused by construction activities.

Data processing, visualization, reporting, notifications, statistical and engineering calculations are done by the SURVIOT platform.

difficulties

Challenges we overcame

  • Varied geological conditions
  • Tunnel construction still not usual in Hungary
  • Avoid accidents like what happened at the M6 tunnel construction
  • Include relevant stakeholders in engineering decisions
  • Experienced human labour is hard to find and expensive
